Hévíz, Keszthely, Lake Balaton: what lies within a quarter of an hour of Nemesbük?

Nemesbük is a quiet village, yet it sits within one of Hungary’s strongest tourism regions. Below we review the destinations within a short drive of the village, and why together they underpin year-round demand for accommodation.

Hévíz and its thermal lake

Lake Hévíz is the area’s best-known attraction. The 4.4-hectare lake is fed by a spring rising from a depth of 38 metres, so abundant that the lake’s water is completely renewed in roughly three days. The water reaches 35–38 °C in summer and does not fall below 22–23 °C even in winter, so bathing is possible all year round. The Hévíz spa presents the lake as the world’s largest biologically active natural thermal lake with a peat-mud bed.

Yet Hévíz offers far more than the lake: it is characterised by medical spa hotels, restaurants, cafés and a farmers’ market, and the town centre remains lively even in winter. All of this is a few minutes from Nemesbük, while guests’ accommodation stays in the tranquillity of the hills.

Keszthely and Festetics Palace

Set at the western tip of Lake Balaton, Keszthely is the region’s cultural centre. Its main attraction is Festetics Palace, the third-largest palace in Hungary. Its Helikon Library holds more than 80,000 volumes and is the only aristocratic private library in the country to have survived intact. The town centre and the Balaton waterfront, with its pier and beaches, are just a few minutes’ walk from the palace.

Lake Balaton

Central Europe’s largest lake covers almost 600 square kilometres, is some 77 kilometres long and has a shoreline of roughly 195 kilometres. Its average depth is barely 3 metres, so it warms quickly in summer, and its shallow stretches of shore are ideal for families with young children. The lake’s most important inflow is the Zala, which reaches Keszthely Bay by way of Kis-Balaton.

The nearest Balaton beaches to Nemesbük are at Keszthely and Gyenesdiás, roughly twenty minutes by car. From there the northern shore, towards Badacsony, is also easily explored.

Kis-Balaton

Lying south-west of Lake Balaton, this wetland of some 150 square kilometres has enjoyed national protection since 1951 and has been a wetland of international importance, a so-called Ramsar site, since 1979. It forms part of the Balaton Uplands National Park. Visitors can explore, among other things, the walking trails of Kányavári Island and the Kápolnapuszta Buffalo Reserve, home to water buffalo, Hungarian grey cattle and other native breeds of livestock. It is a favourite with birdwatchers and families alike.

Golf at Zalacsány

Around ten kilometres from Nemesbük, the Zala Springs Golf Resort offers an 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Robert Trent Jones II. Covering some 160 hectares, the course is ranked 19th in the 2026 LeadingCourses European rankings, and from spring to autumn it draws international golfers to the region.

Wine and gastronomy

The Cserszeg district of the Balaton Uplands wine region begins practically next door. It includes Cserszegtomaj, Gyenesdiás, Hévíz-Egregy, Rezi and Vonyarcvashegy. The signature varieties are Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch). Tastings at smaller wineries and the restaurants of Hévíz and Keszthely alone provide enough to fill several days.

Getting there

From Budapest, the region is reached via the M7 motorway and then the M76 expressway. Since 2022 the M76 has extended as far as Fenékpuszta, the gateway to Keszthely; planning for the continuation to Keszthely is under way. The full journey to Nemesbük takes around two hours.

Hévíz–Balaton Airport, located at Sármellék, handles seasonal charter flights in 2026; no scheduled services currently operate from it. Most guests therefore arrive by car, and the region is easily reached from both Budapest and Vienna.

The investor perspective

Few regions offer such diversified demand: in winter the thermal waters, in spring and autumn golf, hiking and wine, and in summer Lake Balaton drive visitor numbers. This moderates the risk arising from seasonality, which is why our yield model assumes year-round occupancy and works with conservative, base and optimistic scenarios.
